TAMBARAM: Piped Palar water supply to Keelkattalai in the Pallavaram Municipality will be launched in June, Labour Welfare Minister T.M.Anbarasan has said. Mr. Anbarasan, who is the MLA from Alandur constituency, made this assurance to the office-bearers of the newly-formed Federation of Residents Welfare Associations of Keelkattalai (East and West) on Friday evening after dedicating the Arignar Anna Children’s Park in Arulmurugan Nagar. Two wards in Keelkattalai are not covered under the internal distribution system of the Palar drinking water supply system. Till now, Palar water was supplied to residents through lorries that collected drinking water from Ground Level Service Reservoirs (sump) elsewhere. Municipal Chairman E. Karunanidhi said an overhead water tank and a sump in Kutcheri hillock had been constructed with a capacity to store 3.5 lakh litres of water each. The purpose was to supply Palar water to Keekattalai but the project never took off due to the absence of an internal distribution system. Nearly Rs. 75 lakh was being spent to link the main lines with this tank and sump and also to install feeder lines to transport water to the two wards, the Chairman said. A children’s park was developed at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh from the local body’s funds. Mr. Karunanidhi said at least five parks in NGO Colony, Jain Nagar, Venkatraman Nagar and Jayalakshmi Nagar and other localities would be open to the public in the weeks to come.
