NAGPUR: A function scheduled for Saturday to lay the foundation for a 1,980-MW super thermal power station at Tiroda in Maharashtra was cancelled following the death of social worker Baba Amte. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was to attend the function. Being implemented by Adani Power Maharashtra Private Limited, a subsidiary of the Ahmedabad-based Adani Group, the Tiroda project, estimated to cost Rs. 8,000 crore, is expected to begin generation and distribution by 2010-end. Construction to continueA spokesman of the group said here that though the foundation stone laying ceremony was cancelled, construction work, already initiated at the ground level, would continue. The Tiroda unit is the Adani Group’s first venture in the power sector outside Gujarat. It would be completed in three phases, each of 660 MW capacity, within three years, the spokesman said. The Tiroda project, which would captively use coal mined from Lohara (West) and Lohara extension fields, would be the forerunner to the Adani Group’s plan to set up a 1,320-MW plant in Rajasthan and a 2,000-MW plant at Dahej in Gujarat in the next couple of years, he said. Mega project at MundraOne of the major groups in power generation and distribution, the Adanis are in the process of setting up a mega project at Mundra in Gujarat to generate 4,620 MW.
