U.S. takes unbeatable lead

VIENNA: Bob and Mike Bryan beat Julian Knowle and Jurgen Melzer 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday to give defending champion United States an unbeatable 3-0 lead over Austria in the first round of the Davis Cup.

The United States, which won its record 32nd Davis Cup title last December, will play in the April 11-13 quarterfinals against France, which beat Romania.

Andy Roddick and James Blake won the opening singles on Friday against Melzer and Stefan Koubek.

“I am glad we finished off the job on the second day,” U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe said.

McEnroe had not yet decided who will play the singles on Sunday. Roddick, who had some troubles with his right knee against Melzer, was unlikely to play.

“I don’t want Andy out in a dead rubber if he’s not 100 per cent fit,” McEnroe said.
