SOLA India was formed to promote use of lasers in dentistry BANGALORE: The second National Conference on Oral Laser Applications organised by Society for Oral Laser Applications 2008 (SOLA), was inaugurated here on Saturday. The two-day conference will play host to more than 300 delegates and highly qualified practitioners, researchers and academics, who will present different facets of modern laser dentistry. The conference was inaugurated by Naresh Thukral, founder-president and head of Laser Academy, and B.S. Johar and Kirpa Joha of Sola India. The conference was flagged off by a presentation on laser dentistry by Moritz Andrea, president of Sola International. Demystifying the complex subject, Prof. Andrea explained the concept of lasers and how it could be used to increase patient-comfort level and precision. SOLA India was formed with the objective of promoting the use of lasers in dentistry in India. Laser is only a packet of quantum energy or light — to put it rather simplistically — had not been popular with Indian practitioners. Though M.A. Rangoonwala College of Dental Science was the only other college in the world equipped to teach advanced levels of laser dentistry, most dentists preferred to stick to conventional methods. “It is a matter of time before lasers will be used as everyday practice. The next decade belongs to laser,” said Anil Shah, member of SOLA India. Dispelling all myths about laser dentistry, Franzisca Beer, head of Laser Academy, said that the cost factor should not be a barrier, considering that the level of patient comfort and safety achieved with laser treatment was unparalleled. “The vibrations, heat and sound generated by rotating instruments breed a lot of anxiety which can be avoided by using this. This is the closest we can get to pain-free and sterile treatment,” she added. As many as 20 dealers from all over the world gathered to exhibit their laser products. The scientific lectures spread out over the course of two days will deliberate on the latest advances in laser dentistry and even shed light on the interesting world of cosmetic dentistry.
