Sir Vidia’s Shadow comes to town

Special Correspondent

Paul Theroux, the guru of travel writing, speaks at Landmark on Wednesday

Bangalore: For all those who have looked at the world wide-eyed through the window of a train with “The Great Railway Bazaar,” here is an opportunity to meet their travel guide. The author of the book that is regarded a classic in travel writing, Paul Theroux, is in the city on February 13.

Landmark, in association with the U.S. Consulate, is hosting an interaction with the novelist and travel writer at the bookshop at The Forum. He will be speaking about his journeys as a writer.

As a critic puts it, the best thing about Theroux is “his wickedly astute ability to size up a human interaction” and his “uncanny talent for observing a scene for nary a moment and offering up visualisation that stays in the mind’s eye for ages.”

Besides “The Great Railway Bazaar,” he has several more travel books to his credit including “Riding the Iron Rooster” and “Fresh Air Friend.”

Besides his iconic travel books, he is also the author of several novels including “The Family Arsenal,” “Picture Palace,” “The Mosquito Coast” and “Dr. Slaughter.” The last two have been made into films.

More famously, he did some serious mentor-bashing with his “Sir Vidia’s Shadow,” an embittered portrait that put a full stop to a three-decade-long friendship.

Theroux, who divides his time between Cape Cod and Hawaiian Islands, is a professional beekeeper.

The event at Landmark on February 13 starts at 7 p.m.
