Andhra Pradesh
This refers to the news item ‘Meet to focus on eradicating Leprosy’ (The Hindu, Jan 30). The Central Government launched Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) Project in all the districts to eliminate leprosy from the country. The National Leprosy Programme (NLEP) was launched in 1967 with this view. The north eastern state of Nagaland earned the distinction of being the first in the country to achieve the national target of Leprosy elimination . Nagaland relied on the ability of its women to achieve the target under the theme “Naga Women and Leprosy”. And within one year, the Naga women brought about remarkable difference in the leprosy situation in the State. Social organisations and like-minded institutions should give support in cash, kind and manpower for the development of the “Love and Compassion Complex” where the leprosy patients and their dependents are sheltered. M. Satyanarayana Rao, Hanamkonda Telugu classical languageWhile our Andhra leaders are busy here indulging in mud-slinging , without caring for any other aspects of the common people’s lives, the Tamil Nadu leaders have gained a special follow-up asset in re-establishment of a Central Institute of Classical Tamil in Chennai for which the entire cost and the recurring and non-recurring expenditure is being borne completely by the Centre, (The Hindu of 01.02.08.) The question of the classical status for Telugu is still hanging fire. R. Dwarakanatha Rao, Guntakal Good decisionThe decision to admit Bi.PC students into B. Tech (bio technology) though a belated one, is welcome. It corrects the injustice done to Bi.Pc, students all these years (The Hindu 6-2-2008). As a bridge course in Math’s is desirable for Bi.PC students and in biology for M.Pc students. These two courses can be arranged in the respective Engineering colleges, after selections instead of asking the Board of Intermediate examination to do it. Dr. M. Onnuriah Chetty, Nandyal
