Crops lost due to rain

Special Correspondent

ONGOLE: Heavy rain lashed the district last night under the influence of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal causing extensive loss to paddy, bengal gram, chilli and tobacco crops.

Bengal gram, which was harvested and waiting to be threshed in the fields, was soaked in the rain causing dismay to farmers. Similarly, chilli was harvested and kept in the fields for drying. The untimely rain damaged the produce. While paddy was harvested in some areas of Darsi and kept ready for threshing, it was under harvesting stage at some other areas under Nagarjunasagar ayacut. Tobacco, which was harvested and getting ready for curing, got damaged too.

The sudden rain took farmers by surprise and they ran helter-skelter to procure tarpaulins to save the produce. The rain would cause discoloration and affect quality. Farmers fear they would not get remunerative price.
