A true Gandhian

With the demise of Muralidhar Devidas Amte, popularly known as Baba Amte, India has lost a Gandhian and a social activist who fought for the poor, particularly leprosy patients. Even at his old age, he fought shoulder-to-shoulder with activists of the Narmada Bachao Andolan for a just cause. A recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay award, Baba Amte started a “knit India” movement years ago, when the country was afflicted with caste and communal conflicts.

Baba Amte’s committed service to the nation in the field of leprosy for over 70 years has few parallels in Indian history. There is no doubt that his life and mission will be a great inspiration forever.

Baba Amte, in his long and distinguished career, gave a different dimension to the rehabilitation of leprosy patients, ostracised by society. The physical discomfort he suffered was no stumbling block for his crusading efforts.
