Poncha is ‘Best Sportsperson’

RICH HAUL: Siddappa Ramappa Kotre from Belgaum had an eventful outing bagging two golds, one silver two bronzes in the State athletics in Mysore.

MYSORE: The curtain came down on the State Olympic Games at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium here with a protracted closing ceremony, followed by a cultural programme. Cash prizes of Rs.5000 for winning a gold medal, Rs.3000 for silver and Rs.2000 for bronze were announced.

Rehan Poncha with a haul of 12 gold, five silver and two bronze medals was declared the ‘Best Sportsperson’ of the meet.

Individual awards

Individual awards were also presented to Santosh Kumar (SAI) and Sharada Siddhi (KSP) for their titles in the weightlifting championships.

Siddappa Kotre bagged a double in the cycling championships, winning the 15km point race and then clinching his second gold in the 6km scratch race.

Karnataka Olympic Association announced it would be honouring all the Arjuna, Dronacharya and Rajeev Gandhi Khel Ratna awardees of the State.

The results: Basketball: Final: Men: Madras Engineering Group 72 (Peter John 19, Tinu Joseph 15) bt Army Service Corps 52 (Nixon 16, Ravi 14). Women: South Western Railway (Mys) 56 (K. Smitha 25, Chandrakala 10) bt IBBC 26 (Sonam 13).

Cycling (winners): Men: 15km point race: Siddappa Kotre (Belgaum) 34 points; 6km scratch race: Siddappa Kotre (Belgaum); Women: 4km scratch race: Geetanjali Jotepanavar (Bijapur).

Wrestling (winners only):

Freestyle: 50kg: Manjunath S. Kadam; 55kg: Sandeep Haidulkar; 84kg: S.D. Mane; 96+kgs: M.Y. Patil. Greco Roman: 50kg: Gurusidappa Hadpad; 55kg: Sharrif; 60kg: H.C. Hanumanth.
