PUDUKOTTAI: A fisherman of Jegadapattinam was shot dead by the Sri Lankan Navy in the sea on Saturday night. Three fishermen from Jegadapattinam, who ventured into sea by a mechanised boat on Saturday morning, reportedly trespassed into the international waters and the Sri Lankan Navy personnel opened fire at them, police said. P. Thangapandian (35), who suffered a bullet injury on the forehead, died on the spot. The other two fishermen, Babu and Idumban, brought the body to Jegadapattinam and lodged a complaint with the police. An uneasy calm prevailed at Rameswaram, following the shooting incident, which assumes significance in the background of the Sri Lankan Navy levelling charges recently that an Indian boat was used by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to launch an onslaught on its vessels. The fishermen of Rameswaram, who ventured into sea on Saturday, hurriedly came back ashore after hearing the shooting incident in mid-sea. Associations of various fishermen held meetings to discuss the killing of the fisherman. Search was on to trace the two missing boats with eight fishermen. Fisheries officials said there was no cause for worry, as they received information that the missing boats had been traced. SolatiumThe family of Thangapandian will be given a solatium of Rs. 1 lakh. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday issued an order in this regard as he came to know about the killing of the fisherman. Thangapandian was one of the three fishermen on whom fire was opened, according to an official release. The release also said that as the incident was condemnable, the Chief Minister was taking steps to bring the matter to the notice of the Sri Lankan Government through the Centre.
