Rangiya: The 19th Assam State conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), which concluded here on Saturday, resolved to take up a joint fight with non-Congress and non-BJP parties, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), to address the burning issues of Assam. The three-day conference attended by 323 delegates also urged the party workers to undertake independent activities to strengthen the party’s base in the State and resolved to intensify the struggle already launched by the CPI(M) for “peace, unity and all-round development of Assam.” In its political report, unanimously adopted by the conference, the CPI(M) said that among the various tasks ahead, the party would strive to establish ties with the AGP and all other left-democratic and secular parties for a joint struggle to tackle people’s issues. “The party will also continue its efforts to unite all non-Congress and non-BJP, left-democratic and secular forces,” the report said. The conference resolved to support the demand of six communities of the State — Koch-Rajbanshis, Tea-tribes, Morans, Muttocks, Chutia and Tai-Ahoms — for Scheduled Tribe status. It demanded that the Centre grant ST status to these communities without further delay and to increase the quota so that the interests of existing ST communities were not affected. Addressing the open session at the Rangiya Higher Secondary School playground here, Left Front Chairman in West Bengal and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Biman Bose said though Assam was endowed with vast natural resources, these were not harnessed for the State’s development. He alleged that because of the wrong policies of the Congress government, the State remained backward despite the presence of vast natural resources. The wrong policies also led to a spurt in insurgency in the State. The open session chaired by senior State CPI(M) leader Hemen Das was also addressed by senior party leaders Binay Kongar,Nilotpal Basu and CPI-M legislator from Rangiya, Ananta Deka.
