BANGALORE: The Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsh Samithi (KRDSS) has urged the Governor to reserve 23 per cent of budgetary allocations for the welfare of the dalits in 2008-2009 budget. Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Lakshminarayana Nagavara, convenor of the KRDSS, said that the samithi was demanding the share proportionate to the population of Dalits in the State. Mr. Nagavara said the previous Government, led by H.D. Kumaraswamy and B.S. Yeddyurappa, had given an undertaking to the Union Planning Commission that the State would make budgetary allocations depending on the population of the Dalits in the State. He said that the Janata Dal(S) and BJP coalition had promised to earmark 12 per cent in the budget for the welfare of dalits. The Government had released only Rs. 250 crore through link documents submitted to the Social Welfare Department. He said that the Finance Department had not released the funds in proper proportions and claimed that it had done injustice to the Dalits. The Finance Department should brief Governor Rameshwar Thakur in this regard, he added.
