Pakistan envoy to Afghanistan missing
Nirupama Subramanian
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the country’s Ambassador to Kabul went missing late on Monday afternoon as he was crossing over from Afghanistan. His driver and security guard are also missing.
A spokesman said Tariq Azizuddin, a senior diplomat, went missing in Jamrud, in the Khyber tribal agency on the Pakistan side of the border.
The spokesman, however, refused to say if he had been abducted. Reports from the area said he had been out of contact since late afternoon.
The incident has sent shock waves in Pakistan, and heightened the uncertainty ahead of the February 18 election.
Earlier in the day, the military confirmed the arrest of a high-profile Afghan Taliban commander, Mansoor Dadullah on Balochistan’s border with Afghanistan, after a gunbattle with security forces.
Mansoor Dadullah was arrested in Qilla Saifullah district the military said, and was captured along with five others. He succeeded his brother Mullah Dadullah, a senior Taliban military commander, who was killed in May 2007.
