Muperum Vizha was celebrated at Srinivasa Rao Higher Secondary School, Thiruvaiyaru, Thanjavur district. Headmaster N. Rajendran presided over the function. Thiruvaiyaru town panchayat president C. Nagarajan distributed cycles to 444 Plus One students. Thiruvaiyaru panchayat union president Arasabakaran inaugurated the road cleaning programme. Councillor T.R. Sivaprakasam inaugurated a tree planting campaign. Assistant headmasters S. Ravi, R.G. Raghavan and R. Guru offered felicitations. Sports meet heldAnnual sports meet was conducted at Shri Venkateswara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur, on Republic Day. Track and field events were conducted earlier in the day. Correspondent S.P. Balasubramanian distributed awards and certificates to winners. In the super-senior boys and girls category, S.K. Dinesh of class XII and R. Vaishnavi of class XI came first. R. Prashanth of class IX finished first in the senior boys category and V. Shankari of class X in the girls. In junior boys and girls section, V. Dhanu of class VIII and M.J. Benuva of class VIII came first. M. Ilakiyan of class VI came first in sub-junior boys category and R. Priyadharshini of class VI in girls. Principal S. Gowri delivered the sports day address. Academic director C. Jayashankar, vice-principal R. Parimala and staff T. Dhanlakshmi spoke. Mother’s DayVairams Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, celebrated Mother’s Day with kindergarten students. The tiny tots came with their mothers, all of whom were in pink saris. The celebration, themed ‘Cindrella,’ witnessed competition for both mothers and children. The event tested the coordination, intelligence, cooperation and involvement of both. On freedom struggleAl’ Ameen Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam, celebrated Republic Day with gaiety. School executive member S. Sathakathullah Sahib hoisted the national flag. Correspondent M. Kamaludeen presided over the function. He spoke about the freedom movement and the contribution of leaders to the development of the nation. School principal S. Syed Abdul Subahan urged the students to be aware of their rights and duties and secure the independence of the nation with all their might. Students delivered talks on freedom fighters, their lives and struggle in English, Tamil and Hindi. Cultural shows were staged to kindle the spirit of nationalism among students. Scouts campAbout a thousand scouts, guides, scout masters and guide captains from more than 50 high, higher secondary and matriculation schools in Mayiladuturai educational district in Nagapattinam district attended a two-day annual scouts camp organised by Bharat Scouts and Guides at Thyagi G. Narayanasamy Municipal Higher Secondary School in Mayiladuturai last week. The participants took part in a ‘world peace march’ and all-faith prayer as part of the camp, inaugurated by ARCN. Shanmugam, Tamil Nadu Assistant State Commissioner of Scouts and recipient of President’s Award for Scouts. Prof. Shanmugam, who is also the visiting professor for visual communication in Loyola College, Chennai, and A.V.C. College in Mayiladuturai, explained in detail the role played by scouts and guides for society. N.S. Mohan, vice-president of Mayiladuturai educational district scouts association, flagged off the march that went through the main streets carrying placards stressing the importance of world peace and to create awareness among the people about the scouts movement. At the camp fire, the scouts exhibited their talent in the presence of K. Ilangovan, Mayiladuturai educational district scouts organising commissioner. The next day, an all faith prayer was conducted followed by dance, drama, music, cooking, panting, drawing and handicraft competitions. District Guides Commissioner D. Valliammal distributed certificates to winners and N. Jayalakshmi, District Vice-president of Scouts, presented the Rashtrapathi Scout Awards Rolling Shield. Earlier, T.
