Bangalore: A carnival of cultural events and competitions, Gardenia ’08, commenced on Monday at the Garden City College here. The college campus was buzzing with activity with students from more than 82 colleges participating in the events organised as part of the festival.

Inaugurating the festival, Elvin Fernandez, chairman, International Valuation Standards Committee, said, “Gardenia remains a cornerstone for students’ creativity and independence. It is time to think, recreate, innovate and act.”

Bhima Rao, Vice-President (Human Resources), Gokuldas Images, spoke about the need for networking different colleges to showcase the hidden talents of the youth.

“The biggest challenge faced by the youth of today is how to keep the corrupt and negative forces out. The world is moving at a fast pace,” he said.

The Department of Journalism, Electronic Media and Communication had organised the “Media Quiz” and “The Page Maker”, both of which were well received.

Other events which received enthusiastic response included the crossword in statistics organised by the Department of Statistics, “brain hunt” from the Department of IT, “La Galleria” by the Department of Fashion and Apparel Design, a lecture contest by the Department of Mathematics and “extempore” by the Department of Psychology.

The festive mood was enhanced by groups of enthusiastic students, who took a shot at rock climbing. The culinary exhibition organised by the Department of Hotel Management drew a large crowd with an assortment of mouth-watering dishes.
