Games and writing short stories are some of the events

KORAPUT: Padmini Majhi, a tribal girl from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), Koraput was honoured with the first-ever Miss Sabari crown for exhibiting her latent talents in various fields in academics and extra-curricular activities in the district. She has achieved the laurels, which many of her age only dream of, despite several disadvantages.

Dropout

Padmini had to leave her schooling after completing her primary school education in Baraguda, which is her native village in Padmapur panchayat in Koraput district of Orissa due to the poor financial condition of her parents.

Later, she was spotted by the volunteers of KGBV and brought to KGBV, which is a special school for the dropout children, opened in Koraput last year and since then she had not looked back, Siba Prasad Rath, BRCC of Koraput said.

Competitions

Meanwhile, the Sarva Sikhya Abhiyan (SSA) of Koraput had conducted a series of competitions for the students of the seven KGBVs of the district in Koraput.

The competitions were held in various fields like in badminton and caroms, writing short stories, participating in a variety quiz and facing personality tests before a panel of experts who belonged to the field of education.

While this festival had offered a platform to bring the inherited and acquired talents of the children, who had once discontinued their education after their primary education due to various reasons, had generated fresh interest among the disadvantaged children, says Padmini Pathi, the Gender Coordinator of SSA in Koraput.

Umakant Das, a retired teacher of repute attended as the chief guest while Prashant Kumar Das, DPC of DPEP/SSA presided over the meeting.
