Toshali crafts fair from Feb. 15

Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Offering a taste of crafts, cuisine and culture, the second Toshali national crafts fair will commence in the city from February 15 and continue till 27. Being hosted by the State Tourism Directorate, the 13-day extravaganza is supported by the Centre to promote the craft and culture of rural India among the urban community.

The sprawling Janata Maidan in the heart of the city will wear the look of a village of artisans with nearly 150 national and state awardees of handicrafts and handlooms from all over the country setting up their stalls in the specially designed and decorated huts. “Live demonstration and workshops for public view would be this year’s added attraction”, informed the hosts.

Showcasing the wide variety of cuisine culture of the country, a food fair would be mounted on the venue to attract the visitors in large numbers. The thrust would be on Oriya food, it was learnt.

Special attraction

Each evening would have a colourful cultural event with folk, tribal, classical and contemporary dance and music both by the veterans and the budding as well. Celebrated ghazal singers Anup Jalota and Hariharan would be this year’s special attractions. Odissi, Kathak and Bharatanatyam apart, the cultural segment would feature Odissi music that is still struggling to have a classical status. The real treat for the visitors, however, could be the fascinating folk forms of Orissa - the highly acrobatic Gotipua dance of Raghurajpur, the dying rod-puppet theatre of Keonjhar and Sanchar dance of western Orissa, Ghoda Nacha of Chuwdar and Ranapa dance among many.
