Dismal participation at marathon
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: The skies were slightly gloomy, but the weather almost perfect.
The stretch along the Marina, from the Labour statue beyond Foreshore estate down to Adyar, had been blocked for the Chennai Marathon on Sunday, but the participants hardly crowded the roads. The road looked its best as participants ran along, but the numbers were dismal. This year, there were only 4,100 official participants along with a few who joined in for the fun of it — a far cry from the thousands who once participated in this much-awaited Chennai event.
The marathon was recently organised by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and sponsored by Hero Ultra Electrical scooters. Sports Minister Mohideen Khan, Mayor M. Subramanian, and Commissioner of Police Nanchil G. Kumaran joined in the flagging off, while a few eminent sports personalities, including Shiny Wilson, participated in the marathon.
International Technical Officer and consultant for SDAT C.K. Valson regretted that the meet was announced so late. “Last time, there were about 30,000 participants. There should have been more publicity. The timing is also not perfect.”
