DAVANGERE: The construction of three thermal power plants are under way in three different places in the State, and they will each produce over 1,000 megawatts of power after they are commissioned, Chairman and Managing Director of KPTCL Bharatlal Meena has said. Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Meena said the three power projects were being set up at Chamalapura in Mysore, Jewargi in Gulbarga and Ghataprabha in Belgaum keeping in mind the requirements of the State over the next 20 years. Private investors had been roped in to help set up the projects, he said. When his attention was drawn to the opposition to thermal power plants at a few places, he said it was unfortunate that some people had failed to understand the urgent need to generate more power in the State. Without electricity, no development was possible. To a question, he said land levelling had been completed for the Nagarjuna plant, and the company would procure machinery in three or four months. He said KPTCL had settled the arrears payable to sugar factories for power supplied to the State grid and had paid over Rs. 100 crore in the past year. A few sugar factories, in violation of terms and conditions, had resorted to supplying power to other States as they would get higher rates. There had been some delay in the settlement of bills. However, some sugar factories, particularly from the Belgaum region, had started supplying power to other States, he said.
