Bhawanipatna: With authorities just about finishing culling of affected poultry in neighbouring West Bengal, a birdflu scare is looming over Orissa after some chicken deaths were reported in Kalahandi district. After being informed about the deaths at Chicharla village under Kesinga block, a veterinary team from here had collected blood samples and the carcasses for further investigation, officials said. Chief District Veterinary Officer Krushna Chandra Sasmal said field investigation showed 70 chicken had died in the farm during three days. After getting initial blood sample reports and from the symptoms, it appears that the deaths might have been due to raniketh disease, Sasmal told PTI. However, to be sure blood samples and two carcasses have been sent to the Animal Diseases Research Institute at Phulnakhara near Bhubaneswar, he said. Farm owner Trinath Sahu said he bought the chicken from West Bengal during the second week of January adding 1,500 birds of his farm had died during the past fortnight. - PTI
