Residents stage protest

RAJAPALAYAM: Scores of women, led by Rajapalayam Municipal Vice-Chairman S.A. Manikanda Raja on Monday laid siege to the municipal office following flooding of residential areas in the town due to overnight showers.

The protestors wanted Commissioner D. Mony to immediately start desilting of a drainage channel to prevent flooding of Duraisamypuram, Muniamman Temple Street, Sivagamipuram, Sankarapandiyapuram and South Vaidyanathapuram.

These places were inundated during the heavy rainfall in December 2007.

The Commissioner told the Vice-Chairman that Collector V. Chandrasekaran had sanctioned funds and work would be taken up very soon. Chairperson R. Rathinammal and the Commissioner inspected the affected areas.
