PUDUCHERRY: Speakers including industrialists and academics at a pre-budget seminar on Sunday stressed the need for allocation of more funds for the higher education sector in the 2008-2009 Union Budget. At a seminar organised jointly by the Pondicherry Union Territory Management Association (PUTMA) and Pondicherry Institute of Development Research and Action (PIDRA), they also demanded the setting up of a regulatory authority to monitor the quality of education in the Universities and Colleges in the country. After the deliberations, the suggestions were compiled and handed over to Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) M. Ramadass. Mr. Ramadass said he would submit the recommendations to the special wing of the Union Finance Ministry for its consideration. The suggestions included option for micro units to simultaneously adopt Excise and non-Excise operations by keeping separate accounts. There had also been recommendations for more outlay for agriculture sector with compulsory funding by financial institutions. Those who spoke at the seminar included K. Parthasarathy, secretary of the Association of Small Industries in the Union Territory, K. Sabarinath, president of PUTMA and R. Natarajan, joint director of PIDRA.
