Go for cooperatives, farmers told

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai on Monday exhorted the farmers to adopt cooperative methods to become self-sufficient.

Paying rich tributes to the legendary Sir Chhotu Ram at a function in Rohtak, Dr. Kidwai said that by enacting pro-farmer laws during pre-independence days of British rule, he had set an example for others to follow.

The Governor suggested that on the pattern of Maharashtra, the farmers in Haryana’s villages should form their own cooperative units for arranging facilities like supply of agriculture inputs directly from the companies, storage, processing and marketing of their produce and setting up agro-based units.

The benefits

“By adopting cooperatives, the farmers can directly avail of the benefits of subsidy without any role of the middlemen,” he added.

He said they could even open their own bank.

Chief Minister Bhupinder singh Hooda said Sir Chhotu Ram would always be remembered for saving the farmers from exploitation by money lenders and restoring their respect and dignity in society. He asserted that his regime was committed to the welfare of the farmers and had taken several steps for their welfare. Finance Minister Birender Singh said that his maternal grandfather had created new awakening among the farmers.

The Member of Parliament from Rohtak, Deepender Singh Hooda, said that the late leader also took a keen interest in promotion of education and helped in opening a number of educational institutes in the area. Later, Dr. Kidwai accompanied by the Chief Minister and the Finance Minister visited the ancestral house of Sir Chhotu Ram in Garhi-Sampla village.
