Go ahead with Sethu project, Left parties urge Centre

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: State units of the CPI (M) and the CPI on Monday urged the Centre to go ahead with the implementation of the Sethusamudram project, “a 150-year old dream of the people of Tamil Nadu.”

In a joint statement here, N. Varadarajan and D. Pandian, secretary of the CPI (M) and CPI, said recent statements by Congress leaders had raised a question mark on the project.

People’s sentiments

The leaders were reported to have said that though the project was necessary, the sentiments of people should also be taken into account.

Again, the Centre, instead of taking steps to vacate the stay against the project in the Supreme Court, had withdrawn its affidavit.

This led to delay in its implementation.

Joint rally

Urging the Centre to take steps for early implementation of the project, the parties would organise a joint rally and public meeting at Tuticorin on February 23.
