KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala on Monday questioned the Communist Party of India (Marxist) central leadership’s silence on the HMT land deal. He demanded the resignation of the Revenue and Industry Ministers for their alleged role in the deal. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Chennithala said the CPI(M) leadership’s silence only served to expose the party’s double standards on the question of sale of land owned by public sector undertakings. He said CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, who was in the forefront of campaigns against the sale of PSUs, should take necessary steps in this regard. Mr. Chennithala also termed the Chief Minister’s silence on the issue “mysterious.” The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government was sitting on the Chief Secretary’s report because it wanted to save the accused Ministers, he alleged. He said the State government should cancel the entry in the registry regarding the sale of HMT land. The KPCC president condemned the attack on Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy in Kasaragod recently. He said the government should take strong action to bring the culprits to book. The KPCC president justified the February 19 hartal called by the United Democratic Front (UDF) in protest against the rise in prices of essential commodities. He said the LDF government had failed to take concrete steps to hold prices down. Sonia’s visitMr. Chennithala said Congress president Sonia Gandhi would address a public meeting at the Central Stadium here on February 15. According to her tentative programme, Ms. Gandhi would arrive in Kochi on a two-day visit to the State on February 14. She will inaugurate the centenary celebrations of the Kerala Pulayar Mahasabha in Kochi. She will attend a function at the Santhigiri Ashramam in Thiruvananthapuram the next day and visit the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology. She will inaugurate the new office building of the Thiruvananthapuram District Congress Committee.
