Interest worth 450 crore waived off: Hooda

Special Correspondent

‘Coop banks may extend interest-waiver scheme’

Chhotu Ram described as “messiah” of poor

He was a man of the masses, says Chief Minister

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Monday that the interest-waiver scheme of cooperative banks could be extended “if need arises so”.

Addressing a public meeting to mark the 127th Jayanti of the legendary Sir Chhotu Ram at Narwana in Jind district, Mr. Hooda claimed that cooperative banks had waived off interest worth Rs.450 crore which was due from marginal farmers, petty shopkeepers and artisans.

Describing the late Deen Bandhu Chhotu Ram as a “messiah” of farmers, poor and oppressed people, he said his “revolutionary thinking” about the poor and the downtrodden was a motivation to the people to live with dignity and honour while protecting their rights. The legendary leader was not confined to a community and was truly a man of the masses, he added.

Striking out at his political rivals, the Chief Minister said the thinking of the politicians had become narrow and they were more inclined towards creating regionalism and never thinking beyond their narrow interest. Some politicians, he added, were more inclined towards creating a feeling of regionalism which was not in the interest of development of the State.

Mr. Hooda said both he and Finance Minister Birender Singh, a grandson of the late Sir Chhotu Ram, were committed to the welfare of the people.

Mr. Birender Singh while paying glowing tributes to his maternal grandfather urged the youth to imbibe the principles and ideals propagated by Deen Bandhu Chhotu Ram so that they could lead a dignified life. He sought cooperation of the people to help the Government work for betterment of the poor, landless and farmers.
