DEHRA DUN: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttarakhand and the opposition Congress are making all-out efforts to woo the voters in the Pauri Lok Sabha constituency where a by-election is due on February 24. The BJP is promising development at the booth level with Chief Minister B. C. Khanduri seeking a vote for the party nominee T.P.S. Rawat as a trend-setter for the next general elections. “I have always worked for development in all sectors and can assure you that Gen. Rawat if elected M.P. will crusade for the entire State in Parliament,” Mr. Khanduri, who vacated this seat following his election as Chief Minister, has been saying at various public meetings in Dehra Dun city and Pauri. The Congress, which was a house divided, seems to be trying hard to put up a united face after the party supremo Sonia Gandhi snubbed some of the leaders for pursuing factional politics. Ms. Gandhi is said to have taken a tough stand after the party candidate for the by-election, Satpal Maharaj, complained that a few senior leaders were working for his defeat. With no major issue at hand, Congress leaders Yashpal Arya, Harish Rawat and Leader of Opposition Harak Singh Rawat are going around seeking a vote against “misrule and lack of development” during the past one year of BJP rule in the State. Mr. Satpal Maharaj has been touring the remote areas of Chamoli and Rudraprayag with his followers and promising the laying of railways in the hills if elected and made a Minister at the Centre.
