Defence Minister’s first visit to DRDO laboratories today

Ravi Sharma

The delayed Kaveri engine and aircraft Tejas will be focus of presentations

BANGALORE: Defence Minister A.K. Antony will be making his maiden visit to four key Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratories that are located here on Tuesday.

The day-long visit will see Mr. Antony visit the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE).

Three other DRDO laboratories, the Microwave Tube Research and Development Centre, the Centre for Airborne Systems and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) though not on the Minister’s itinerary will also be making a brief presentation of their activities at the LRDE premises.

Mr. Antony, who had inaugurated the new building of the CAIR in December 2006, has not visited any of the other DRDO laboratories located in Bangalore after assuming the mantle of Defence Minister.

He will be accompanied by the Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister M. Natarajan and the Chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Ashok K. Baweja.

A spokesperson for the DRDO told The Hindu that GTRE, ADE, ADA and LRDE will be making a “presentation of their activities to the Minister”.

Focus

At GTRE and the ADA, the focus is expected to be on the progress of India’s two biggest indigenous aeronautical projects, the much-delayed Kaveri engine and the light combat aircraft Tejas, respectively.

ADE will showcase their unmanned aerial vehicles, including the multi-mission Nishant and the pilot-less target aircraft Lakshya.

Mr. Antony will also be visiting the HAL Airport to view a flight test trial of the Tejas.
