Lalu Prasad urged to upgrade railway station

TUMKUR: Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad was urged to upgrade the Tumkur railway station when he visited the station for inspection. Krishnamurthy, Tumkur Zilla Panchayat President; S. Shafi Ahmed, Tumkur district Congress Committee president; Syed Mujib, Communist Party of India (Marxist) secretary; D.S. Babu, Janata Dal (Secular) vice-president; Gangadharaiah, Bahujan Samajwadi Party secretary; T.G. Adaveeshappa, Tumkur district Editors’ Association president; and Shahsidhar, Karnataka Yuva Vedike president met Mr. Lalu Prasad in a delegation and urged him to consider the upgradation of Tumkur Railway Station into a full-pledged railway junction.

Mr. Adaveeshappa said the delegation presented a memorandum to the Railway Minister. Besides upgradation, they also demanded railway overpasses at all the nine level crossing points in Tumkur City; an additional train between Tumkur and Bangalore in the fore noon; a day-time train service between Bangalore and Belgaum via Tumkur; a ramp way or a subway between the platforms at the station to help senior citizens and the physically handicapped persons; and round-the-clock drinking water supply.

The delegation urged him to complete work on the Tumkur-Chitradurga railway line, via Sira and Hiriyur towns. Later, talking to presspersons, Mr. Adaveeshappa, who led the delegation, quoted Mr. Lalu Prasad as having assured the delegation of fulfilling their demands.

He said the Minister was happy that the delegation comprised leaders of different political parties and forums. Mr. Adaveeshappa said Mr. Lalu Prasad directed top Railway officials to look into the and study feasibility of each of the demands and recommend to him suitable action towards fulfilling them.

Later, speaking after inaugurating a State-level Yadav Sammelan in Chitradurga, the Railway Minister said that work on the railway line connecting Chitradurga and Tumkur will begin within a month. Mr. Lalu Prasad said: “I know that Chitradurga is a neglected district which has resulted in its backwardness.”

With the link, the Ministry wished to give emphasis on the advancement of the district and generate more employment for the local people, he said.
