CHENNAI: The two-year-old National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), currently being implemented in 10 districts across Tamil Nadu, will be extended to 20 more districts with effect from April 1. [Chennai is excluded from the scope of the NREGS]. When the NREGS took off in February 2006, it was launched in 200 districts all over the country, including six in Tamil Nadu — Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Nagapattinam, Sivaganga and Dindigul. In the next phase, which began in April 2007, the NREGS was extended to 130 more districts in the country, including four districts in the State — Karur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Tirunelveli. The NREGS envisages provision of at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment every year to every household whose adult members come forward for unskilled manual work. Around 8,414 works were completed in the State and the total expenditure incurred was Rs.567 crore from the inception of the scheme till February 5, 2008. Preparatory processThe State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department has conducted training programmes for District Collectors, block development officers, engineering staff, village panchayat presidents and Makkal Nala Paniyalargal (public welfare officials). Arrangements were under way for representatives of village panchayats to visit villages where the scheme was being implemented.
