Dangerous trend

It is no surprise that Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray has taken an anti-north Indian stand on the rights of local Marathi “manoos.” (‘Uddhav: sons of soil cannot be denied jobs,’ Feb. 11). As rightly observed in the report, the fear that cousin Raj Thackeray would hijack his party’s agenda had prompted Mr. Uddhav Thackeray to add fuel to an already raging controversy. Denigration of any person or community should be treated as “anti-national” and punished severely. No one can proclaim this land as their soil.

Regionalism is like a body part refusing to work with the rest of the body. We lose sight of the fact that unless all limbs work in unison, the body cannot function. A region may become more prosperous than other regions for various factors. I am a South Indian but I am as proud of the great city of Mumbai as any Maharashtrian. The city’s greatness is not because of Maharashtrians alone. There is no meaning in either Maharashtrians or non-Maharashtrians claiming superiority or indulging in one-upmanship.

P.V. Divakaran,

Avittathur
