Lopsided growth

The lopsided growth of our economy has been well brought out by V.R. Krishna Iyer in the article, ‘Needed, a renewed socialist concern’ (Feb. 5). The IT boom has mainly benefited professionals and industrialists, has led to heavy FDI inflow, and has created a neo-rich middle class. At the other end of the spectrum, the lot of poor farmers has remained unchanged. Only after the standard of living of our farmers has improved can our economic growth be termed all-inclusive.

B. Gurumurthy,

Madurai

I was puzzled by one letter in these columns on the subject which said that socialism did not create wealth anywhere and that several countries became successful only after they moved away from the concept. One needs to only look at the bold and daring experiments being attempted in Latin American countries to provide an alternative, humane, and just social and economic order. The crux of Justice Krishna Iyer’s plea was that the policy of globalisation creates wealth for a chosen few while the vast multitudes are left to starve. Socialism, on the contrary, points the way to an equitable economic order.

S.V. Venugopalan,

Chennai
