Letters to the Editor
The op-ed page article, ‘Search for home truths continues, 75 years on’ (Feb. 8), on the coming to terms by Germany of its Nazi past made poignant reading. What struck me was the statement that the Western allies in 1945 were careful not to impose the kind of humiliation on Germany as they did at the end of the First World War. Had the humiliating treaty not been imposed at that time, the Germany would not have undergone hrough such hardship. This crucial lesson of not inflicting humility revealed itself admirably in another theatre where Japan’s Emperor was allowed to retain his position after his country was brought to its knees. V. Sivakumar, Kochi
