KOCHI: The boom in construction industry has been a boon to the electrical fan industry. It has registered 20 per cent growth during the current year, according to Sunil Wadhwa, managing director of Usha International Limited. The increase in air conditioning has not affected the fan sector as fans are used for air circulation even in most of the air conditioned rooms and halls. This apart, fans that consume less power has an advantage in States such as Kerala, which has been facing power shortage. People who construct new buildings for residential or commercial purposes do not use old fans. High speed fans are favoured in India in comparison to countries such as China, Mr. Wadhwa said. The increase in raw materials has been a challenge to the industry. Outsourcing has been done in certain segments, but the company had been insisting on its own research and development as well as design. The company is aiming at 20 per cent growth in sales of fans during the next financial year. The Kerala market constitutes about 8 per cent of the all India market. The company has introduced a new range of 23 fans, including Usha Hunter fans in the super premium category and Allure in the decorative segment. The computerised sewing machines are in good demand, he said. New designs can be transferred to the machine through direct personal computer connection. The company’s electrical motors and pumps, water coolers and dispensers, and home UPS systems too are in good demand, according to him.
