Billiards & Snooker
ON THE CUE: Pankaj Advani clinched the billiards title. KOCHI: Host BPCL’s Devendra Joshi capped his fine run by winning the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board’s inter-unit snooker title at the Regional Sports Centre here on Monday. After a surprise bounce-back victory over former world snooker champion Pankaj Advani in the semifinals, the seasoned Joshi defeated ONGC’s Alok Kumar 3-1 in the final. “I took some chances and they paid off,” said Joshi about his stunning semifinal victory (he was down 0-2) over Pankaj Advani, the National snooker champion. However, it was virtually a cakewalk for ONGC’s Pankaj Advani, who notched up breaks of 397 (the tournament’s highest) and 199 on his way to the billiards title. The results: Billiards final: Pankaj Advani (ONGC) bt Dhruv Sitwala (ONGC) 931-393 (breaks of 397, 199 by Pankaj). For third place: Alok Kumar bt Devendra Joshi 296-256. Snooker final: Devendra Joshi (BPCL) bt Alok Kumar (ONGC) 3-1 (35-93, 92-26, 65-36, 51-42). For third place: Aditya Mehta (IOC) bt Pankaj Advani 2-1 (2-83, 87-17, 65-4). Semifinals: Devendra Joshi bt Pankaj Advani 3-2 (37-63, 48-73, 68-36, 77-26, 66-52); Alok bt Aditya Mehta 3-1 (28-71, 61-17, 61-7, 64-2). — Principal Correspondent
