MANCHESTER: Manchester City completed a Premier League sweep of cross-town rival Manchester United on Sunday, beating the host 2-1 amid commemorations for the 50th anniversary of the Munich disaster. Darius Vassell put City ahead in the 24th minute and Benjani Mwaruwari added the second just before halftime. Michael Carrick got a goal back in the 90th, but United was unable to produce a fitting tribute to the five remaining survivors who attended the match at Old Trafford. The last time City beat United in the league in both the home and away matches was in 1970. Long time comingCity, wearing light blue retro shirts, celebrated its first win at Old Trafford since 1974. United was also in 1950s-style uniforms devoid of sponsorship. The loss kept United from moving past idle Arsenal at the top of the Premier League standings. Liverpool holds Chelsea Chelsea wasted a chance to get back in the title race as Avram Grant’s side was held to a frustrating goalless draw by Liverpool on Sunday. The Blues could have moved within three points of leaders Arsenal with a win at Stamford Bridge but Liverpool had much the better of a lacklustre encounter. The results: Chelsea 0 drew with Liverpool 0; Manchester United 1 (Carrick 90) lost to Manchester City 2 (Vassell 25, Benjani 45). — Agencies
