Tamil Nadu
It is more than two years since the Ellis Nagar bridge work started and there is no indication of the work being completed in the near future. This is despite the former Collector having given an assurance it bridge will be thrown open for traffic in March 2007. Since people living in Ellis Nagar, Mahaboobpalayam, S.S. Colony, Railway Colony, Travellers Bungalow Road and Bypass Road take a circuitous route via Palanganatham or Madura Coats bridge to go to the other side, they are put to untold hardship. This also leads to high cost of travel in the form of autorickshaw/ taxi fare or more fuel for owner’s vehicles, ironically at a time when the government asks people to conserve fossil fuels. Hope the authorities view the matter seriously and take action to expedite and complete the work as assured by the Collector recently through your column. Franklin Joseph, Madurai Report on viability of Sethu projectIn 1965, on a request by the then Union Minister T.T. Krishnamachari, the Central Government formed a team led by C. V. Venkateswaran, Chief Engineer, to submit a report on viability of Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project, conceived more than 150 years ago. The Tamil Nadu government was represented by R. Natarajan and K.R. Ramasamy. A detailed report of about 300 pages was handed over to the then Union Minister for Shipping and Transport, V. K. R. V. Rao in July, 1968. The report took into consideration the economic viability, technical feasibility and environmental factors, and above all safety parameters with regard to defence. Importance of the Sethusamudram project was pointed out in the technical and economic reports submitted then. After lengthy discussions at numerous fora over the years on various parameters such as alignment, implementation of the project started at long last. This report will vouch for the positive features of the project. K.S. Kasiviswanathan, Madurai Unclean abattoir at NelpettaiThe slaughterhouse at Nelpettai, which caters to the whole of Madurai, is ill quipped to the core. This unhygienic facility looks more like an open toilet. In the absence of veterinary doctors, goats are not screened properly. Sometimes even dead and weak goats are slaughtered. This may lead to mutton consumers getting sick. There are no veterinary doctors appointed to this abattoir. The butchers’ association and councillors requested the Corporation several times to post veterinarians here on a permanent basis but to no avail. The slaughter house has also become a centre for peddling drugs. The corporation authorities must take immediate action to put an end to all these anomalies. S. Sheik Ismail Sadath, Madurai
