The awareness of biomedical waste disposal rules and regulations and the realisation that systems must be in place are high.
There are teething problems in implementation, such as wrong waste going into wrong bins.
Local citizens’ monitoring committees would help.
It is quite sad that the State Advisory Committee on biomedical waste, which can take steps to constitute ‘technical’ and ‘monitoring’ sub-committees with citizens’ or NGOs’ participation to assist the enforcement agency in bringing about better compliance, rarely meets.
