Thiruvananthapuram
Purifier: A road show on waste management organised in the city on Monday. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city-based Biotech centre for development of biogas technology and other non- conventional energy sources, winner of the international Ashden award for sustainable energy, has launched a year- long road show on solid waste management. Ashden award judges David Fulford and Ben Dixon flagged off the road show here on Monday after a review of the NGO’s activities. Biotech director A. Sajidas was present. The road show comprises an exhibition of working models to demonstrate methods of solid waste treatment. These include a domestic garbage processing unit, fuel-efficient stove, integrated treatment plants for institutions and units generating power from waste. A video documentary has also been incorporated into the show. Mr. Sajidas said the road show would tour all districts and conduct awareness classes at schools, colleges, offices and public places. Biotech won the Ashden award for developing and installing biogas plants using food waste to generate gas for cooking. The international award is given away for the world’s leading green energy projects. The NGO has built 12,000 domestic biogas plants, 220 institutional units and 17 municipal plants that use waste from markets to generate power. About 160 domestic plants also use waste from eco friendly toilets. The first integrated waste management system of its kind installed in the Kadakkal panchayat market has been recognised as a safe method for disposal of organic waste.
