Gearing up: The sorting machine that has been installed at the waste treatment plant of the Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram. BRAHMAPURAM: Though delayed by nearly two months, the work on the proposed solid waste treatment plant of the Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram is steadily progressing. On a given day, one can see nearly 100 workers employed in various departments of work at the site. The plant is coming up in over 1.5 lakh sq.ft. on 15 acres and will be the biggest of its kind in South India, claimed Corporation officials. A sorting machine has been erected at the tipping floor where the waste that is brought to the site will be dumped. The tress work of the treatment plant has been completed. Nearly 50 per cent of the flooring and 70 per cent of the roofing of the treatment plant has been completed, said the official of the Kochi Corporation in charge of the plant. The remaining work of the floor and roof of the treatment plant will be completed in 10 days. The machinery of the compost processing plant will soon be erected. The tress work of the product godown is progressing whereas the flooring in this segment has been completed, he said. The installation of the tress for the vermin compost unit will begin on Tuesday. The Kerala State Electricity Board has cleared the application of the Corporation for power connection. Generators have also been brought to the site though they are yet to be charged, officials said. Man-days lostThe Corporation had asked the Andhra Pradesh Technology Development Corporation to complete plant in seven months from the earlier decided 12, Of the said period, the authorities lost over 46 man-days of work due to reasons ranging from hartals to local agitations against the plant, heavy rain and quarry strike. The processThe Brahmapuram plant employs the milk and curd process for treatment of waste where the inoculum and the leachate from the waste will be sprayed over the waste to accelerate the process of decomposing, said V. Sunilkumar, project engineer of the Fact Engineering and Design Organisation (FEDO), which is the consultant of the Kochi Corporation for the project. The engineers of the FEDO are at the site overseeing the implementation of the project. There is no possibility of the foul smell or related issues at the plant. The treatment process at the plant is an exothermic one where heat will be generated. The process will generate 45 to 60 degree heat which will destroy germs and weeds and do away with the possibility of foul smell, explained Mr. Sunilkumar.
