Girl run over by lorry

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: A four-year-old girl died on the spot after hit by a lorry that was backing up at Irumbuliyur near Tambaram on Monday. The accident took place when the girl was playing a little distance away from her house on Erikkarai Street. Radhika was the eldest child of Jaikumar, a plumber and Mekala, housewife.

The lorry — carrying a consignment for a bakery in the locality — had off-loaded the goods and was backing up. The lorry driver had not seen the girl playing behind the vehicle. The girl died instantly when she came under the wheels.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled from the spot. He ran past the GST Road and was crossing the railway tracks, when Railway Protection Force personnel nabbed him and promptly handed him over to Tambaram police station. He was identified as Anandakrishnan (41) and was arrested, police added.
