Free TV sets given to 50 per cent of targeted people: Nehru

Tiruchi: Transport Minister K. N. Nehru on Monday distributed free colour televisions to 3,681 families in Corporation wards 22, 24 and 26.

In ward 22 and 26, there were 1,870 and 1,755 recipients respectively, while in ward 24, free televisions were provided to 56 families that were left out in the earlier distribution. The free television sets were distributed at a function in which Anbil Periyasami, MLA, presided over.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Nehru said that the poll promise of providing free televisions has been implemented in 10 wards falling under the Tiruchi I Assembly constituency.

The Government has so far completed distribution of free colour television sets to 50 per cent of targeted beneficiaries and would complete the process of distribution to 1.5 ration card holders by the end of its term.

Mr. Nehru informed that global tenders would be invited for implementation of Rs.144.86-crore Drinking Water Augmentation Scheme in the city for which the Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin had successfully ensured Japanese assistance.

After the completion of the scheme in nine phases over a ten-month period, each household in the city would be assured of adequate drinking water supply.

Foundation stone laid

Mr. Nehru also laid foundation stone for construction of official quarters for Corporation Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Rs.25 lakh each. Later, he distributed free bicycles to the students of K.A.P. Viswanatham Higher Secondary School.

Mayor Sarubala Tondaiman, Deputy Mayor M. Anbalagan, Corporation Commissioner T.T. Balsamy, Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan and others officials participated.
