No dearth of welfare schemes in State: Karunanidhi

Special Correspondent

M. Karunanidhi

CHENNAI: The State Government is implementing a host of welfare schemes, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Monday.

Responding to Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) president Vijayakant’s observation at Kovilpatti that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was not interested in people’s welfare, Mr. Karunanidhi, without naming him, gave an account of numerous welfare schemes of the government in a statement.

He wondered whether the implementation of the schemes did not reflect the government’s concern for the common man. Were not marriage assistance and maternity scheme meant for people’s welfare?

Mr. Karunanidhi referred to the free power supply scheme for agriculture, and the formation of a labour welfare board for non-formal sector. “Have the government staff encountered any problem after the DMK took over? Are not the free power supply scheme for weavers and distribution of free dhotis and sarees actions meant to help people?” he asked. He listed numerous steps taken by the Centre for the benefit of the State.

On corruption, he said a transparent tendering system was being followed in the execution of projects.

Mr. Karunanidhi said the DMDK leader, who represents Vriddachalam constituency, should have come to the Assembly and participated in the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address and pointed out the administration’s lapses. Had he done so, he would have received the answers [from the government]. Those who want to come up in public life should have humility, not arrogance. It will be better for them to make honest statements after analysing the factual position, Mr. Karunanidhi said. In another statement, he advised his party members to avoid the use of his photographs in advertisements, hoardings and posters for public functions except in unavoidable circumstances.

‘Strict warning’

Issuing “strict warning” to members of his party, he said he would be failing in his duty if he did not point out that organising the functions in an ostentatious manner would irritate large sections of the public.
