Court nod for second counselling for PG medicine

Legal Correspondent

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday permitted the Centre through the Directorate-General of Health Services to conduct a second round of counselling for filling the 50 per cent all-India quota for postgraduate medical and dental seats from the academic year 2008-09.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justices R.V. Raveendran and L.S. Panta passed this order on the Centre’s application seeking approval for continuation of the second counselling as was done for 2007-2008.

The Centre said the second counselling, held as per the court directions, proved beneficial to students. In their interests and to ensure that the maximum number of seats in all-India quota seats was filled, it would be just and necessary to continue the exercise.

For 2008-09, the first counselling was to be held between February 23 and March 15 and subject to the court orders, the second counselling could be conducted between April 22 and May 9 and the admission process completed by May 31.

The application, giving the tentative schedule for 2008-2009, sought approval of the time frame for 2008-09 and for conducting the second counselling in subsequent years. Accordingly, the Bench gave its nod.
