New bus stand eludes Karur

L. Renganathan

KARUR: Served by a cramped bus stand, people of Karur have been yearning for a spacious terminal more suited to serve its expanding population and demand.

Hemmed in by business establishments, the Muthukumarasamy Bus Stand maintained by the Municipality has out-served its purpose and is bursting at its seams, unable to cater to the burgeoning vehicle and human population.

The demand for a new bus stand for Karur town has been there for some years now. Four sites _ Thoranakkalpatti, Gandhigram, Kodur and Vennamalai were identified as probable locations.

Of course, real estate dealers and a few people who had lands in those areas benefited every time talk on new bus stand spread, but nothing moved substantially on the ground. Also, there are some influential persons who demand status quo for their convenience.

While the Gandhigram site belongs to the Municipality itself, the expanding four-lane highways preclude that the site from being chosen. Kodur, on the Erode Road, also faces the same deficiency. The Vennamalai site is a bit interior for heavy traffic leaving Thoranakkalpatti as the ideal choice since all highways converge there.

As Collector A. Karthik had, a couple of years back, surveyed and studied the sites and had gone on record that Kodur, Vennamalai or Thoranakkalpatti would be chosen.

The Assembly Assurances Committee and the Public Accounts Committee during their visits had urged the Municipality to seek a shift. But nothing has moved and people continue to suffer silently.

The existing bus stand does not qualify for a quality terminal fit for a town boasting a turn over of Rs.3,500 crore a year through varied ventures such as textile exports, bus body building and finance lending. The bus stand does not have enough bays to accommodate all buses. Quality drinking water is not available and toilets scare away visitors.
