DAVANGERE: Tension prevailed for a while near the old Government Maternity Hospital here on Tuesday when some people broke the windowpanes of the hospital in protest against what they termed corruption at the hospital. When a father was allegedly refused entry into a ward to see his newborn baby, he and his relatives became restive. They said an employee of the hospital had asked them for Rs. 500 if they wanted to see the child, saying that it was the “usual practice”. When they refused to pay the bribe, the hospital authorities refused to allow them inside. Angered by this, they broke the windowpanes and ransacked the office of the hospital. The police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. They arrested five persons, who were later released on bail. Hospital authorities told The Hindu that they normally refused entry to people visiting newborn babies, as the infants were susceptible to infection. Nurses and doctors were required to ensure that certain rules were followed after delivery, they said.
