CHANDIGARH: The Gram Panchayats in Haryana have been actively involved in improving the functioning of the Public Distribution System (PDS), an official spokesman said here on Tuesday. He further disclosed that the Gram Panchayats have been asked to verify the entries of PDS items made in the stock registers of the fair price shops. The Panchayats have also been empowered to hear and redress the grievances of the people concerning PDS. They would have to submit a report about PDS functioning once in a month to the Panchayat Samitis. It has also been made mandatory for the allottees of fair price shops to put up a notice board in front of the shop to display information about opening and closing time and the list of items, with prices, which were in stock. In summer -- from April 1 to September 30, that is -- the fair price shops would remain open from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Similarly, during winter that is from October 1 to March 31, the shops would remain open from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
