Puducherry
SEEKING SOLUTION: A resident of Reddiarpalayam submitting a petition to MLA R. Viswanathan in Puducherry on Tuesday. PUDUCHERRY: Civic issues such as lack of proper waste disposal facility, lacunae in drinking water system and bad roads in the Reddiarpalayam Assembly constituency came to limelight at a grievance redressal meeting convened by MLA R. Viswanathan on Tuesday. At the meeting held at Reddiarpalayam Puthu Nagar, officials belonging to different departments listened to the grievances aired by the residents on the civic problems. The public submitted memoranda highlighting their grievances. A majority of the participants wanted the civic authorities to put in place a proper waste management system to collect and dispose of waste. They complained that since garbage was not cleared on a day-to-day basis, it got accumulated on the streets giving room for stray dogs to thrive. This increased mosquito menace in the area, posing health and environment problems. There were also complaints over the drinking water supply system, particularly in places such as Mookambika Nagar, and Mariamman Koil Street. The residents complained that supply to apartments and buildings with more than one floor had been facing problems in the supply of water. They felt that the problem was owing to low pressure in the drinking water supply system. They appealed to the officials concerned to establish an additional pumping station at Mookambika Nagar to rectify the problem. Residents of Kaveri Nagar took up the issue of stray dog menace, which, according to them, had increased, recently. Incidents of dog bite had increased of late, they claimed. They also complained of bad roads, leakage in drainage system and lack of streetlights in Reddiarpalayam Puthu Nagar. The officials from the Departments of Electricity, Public Works and Health and personnel of the Oulgaret Municipality assured that they would take up the issues with the government. Mr. Viswanathan said that public grievances meetings would be held in all the 10 wards of the Reddiarpalayam constituency in the coming months. Such meetings would help the officials get a first-hand knowledge of the grievances, he said.
