Five drown in attempt to save girl

TIRUVANNAMALAI: Five persons drowned while trying to rescue a girl from a pit at Polgunam village near Keezhpennathur in Tiruvannamalai district on Monday.

According to the police, Jayanthi (8) had come to the village to attend a marriage. She slipped and fell into the pit, filled with water from recent rain. Muniyammal (42), Amuda (32), Monisha (10) and Lenin (12), guests at the marriage ceremony, tried to rescue Jayanthi, but drowned.

Another guest, Latha, rescued the girl, but slipped and was drowned. — Special Correspondent
