NEW DELHI: With the marriage season once again at its peak and traffic jams caused by parked vehicles and marriage processions leading to chaos all over the Capital, Finance Minister A. K. Walia called upon the Delhi Development Authority and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday to commission more community halls and “baraat ghars” to prevent such a crisis in the future. Expressing dissatisfaction over the acute shortage of such community halls for organising marriage receptions, he said the situation was particularly bad in East Delhi where a lot of inconvenience was being caused to the residents due to the traffic pile-ups being caused by the marriages. Dr. Walia said due to the inadequacy of such covered areas, people in East Delhi had been forced to solemnise marriages on roads and streets causing inconvenience to residents of the entire district. Stating that a third of the total population of Delhi lives in East Delhi, Dr. Walia said the infrastructure for community services was grossly inadequate in the region. With people from nearby States also preferring to conduct the marriages in Delhi, he said the situation becomes even more difficult.
